Ethical Analytics Lecture Set with Statistical Astrophysicist on Feb. 23

The Applied Biostatistical Sciences (ABS) Network and MICHR are hosting a lecture with David Corliss, PhD, who will talk about “Ethical Analytics: Best Practices for Recognizing and Addressing P-Hacking and the File Drawer Problem.”

David Corliss is the founder and Director of Peace-Work, a volunteer cooperative of statisticians and data scientists applying statistical methods to issue-driven advocacy in poverty, education, social justice, and providing analytic support for charitable groups. He is a frequent conference speaker and guest lecturer on ethical best practices in statistics and AI.

With a PhD in statistical astrophysics, Dr. Corliss is an Assistant VP in Data Science at an automotive insurance company. He is active in the American Statistical Association, recently serving as Chair for the Conference on Statistical Practice, and writing a monthly column on Data for Good for Amstat News.

This talk will discuss professional researchers often face difficult questions on the nature of evidence and proof. In some highly regulated areas, such as biostatistics, this can be complicated by the widely applied standard of α = 0.05. This creates the risk of p-Hacking: repeating an experiment until a .05 example is obtained. The reverse of this is the File Drawer problem: papers that go unpublished and unnoticed for failing to meet a sometimes arbitrary standard. This presentation discusses both of these issues and the ethical concerns they can create, together with how to identify them and strategies to mitigate them.
