Dr. Diane Harper Named Faculty Lead for MICHR’s New Hub Research Capacity Core

Diane M. Harper MD, MPH, MS, will serve as the faculty lead of the new Hub Research Capacity Core at MICHR. The Hub Research Capacity Core represents the integration of critical components of ensuring implementation of high-quality clinical research at the University of Michigan. Bringing together expertise in clinical research management and participant recruitment, and facilitating the integration of special populations into research, the new core will play a central role in advancing MICHR’s mission of supporting clinical research at U-M. Ultimately, the work of this team provides the essential support necessary to enable translation of discovery to make people's lives better.

“The Hub Research Capacity Core is one of the vital programs that compose MICHR,” said Julie Lumeng, MD, MICHR Director. “Dr. Harper’s significant experience in conducting national and international clinical trials as well as support for populations that are often under-represented in research provides MICHR with an outstanding leader for this position.”

Dr. Harper serves on the MICHR Cabinet and is a Professor in Family Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Women’s Studies. She is an internationally recognized clinical research expert in human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated diseases, their prevention, early detection, and treatment for the prevention of cancer. She has been a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to advise on global guidelines and to set up screening and prevention operations in low- and middle-income countries to prevent cervical cancer. She has published over 200 research papers, which have received tens of thousands of citations, has contributed to multiple textbooks, and has participated in developing published U.S. and global cervical cancer screening guidelines.

“MICHR is an exceptional part of the university, unlike any I’ve experienced. I’m buoyed by the opportunity to further work as a bridge between scientific developments and improving people's health and lives,” Dr. Harper said. “The Hub Research Core does just that by helping ensure the rigor and appropriateness of clinical trials as well as creating opportunities for populations that are rarely studied to learn more about better health outcomes."

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Harper on her new role at MICHR.
