MICHR Welcomes Julie Lumeng, MD as New Director

Julie Lumeng, MD, Confirmed by U-M Regents as MICHR Director; Associate Dean for Research, Clinical and Translational; Assistant Vice President for Research

Julie Lumeng, MD, the Thomas P Borders Family Research Professor of Child Behavior and Development, Professor of Pediatrics, Medical School and Professor of Nutritional Sciences, School of Public Health has been confirmed to the role of MICHR Faculty Director and Associate Dean for Research, Clinical and Translational, effective July 1. The Board of Regents confirmed the appointment July 16, 2020.

Thank you to Dr. George Mashour, Chair of Anesthesiology, Robert B. Sweet Professor of Anesthesiology Faculty, Neuroscience Graduate Program, U-M Medical School, for his past five years of outstanding leadership of MICHR. He will continue to serve as Co-Director going forward.

Prior to accepting the position, Dr. Lumeng had worked with MICHR in various capacities since 2015, serving as the Faculty Lead for Clinical Research Management, Special Populations-Children, and Participant Recruitment groups. She also has a long and successful history of involvement with units such as the Regulatory Affairs Office, IRBMED, and UMOR on central campus. Her research focuses on applying emerging science in child development and behavior to the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. She has been the Principal Investigator on 15 extramural grants, including four R01s, and is currently the PI on $6.4M in total extramural funding.

Dr. Lumeng will report to Steven Kunkel, PhD, Executive Vice Dean for Research of the Medical School and Chief Scientific Officer for Michigan Medicine. Dr. Lumeng is a tenured Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical School and Professor of Nutritional Sciences in the School of Public Health. She has been the Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics, as well as the Director of the Center for Human Growth and Development and a member of MICHR’s faculty cabinet. She will serve as Co-Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Clinical Translational Sciences Award (CTSA), which is up for renewal.

As an Associate Dean, she will be a member of the Medical School Office of Research leadership team, working to shape the broader vision for the Medical School’s clinical research enterprise, as well as advise on enterprise-wide policies, procedures, and operations.

In addition to her new role at the Medical School, Dr. Lumeng also received a five-year appointment on central campus in UMOR as Assistant Vice President for Research – Clinical and Human Subjects Research.

“Julie will help the Medical School Office of Research in developing and executing a strategic vision to facilitate clinical and translational investigations across the research spectrum,” said Dr. Kunkel. “Ultimately, her expertise will reinforce the U-M biomedical enterprise as a global leader in research and patient care.”
