Staff and faculty from the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) recently published a paper highlighting the impact of a mentor recognition program. The paper, published in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science, discusses the creation of MICHR’s Distinguished Clinical & Translational Research Mentor Award and its impact on the culture of mentorship at the University of Michigan.

To see whether the award was having an impact, staff surveyed faculty who were recognized from 2012 (when the award was established) until 2017.

Many respondents who left comments made an explicit connection between their receipt of the award and changes to factors that would encourage and reward mentoring. For example, several noted that referencing the award in training grant proposals might better enable them and their mentees to obtain further funding to support their mentorship. Two of the respondents even said receipt of the award led to their department’s decision to provide them with dedicated effort for mentorship.
