What is this service?

The MICHR Mentoring Academy is based on the curriculum from CIMER (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research). The goal of CIMER and the MICHR Mentoring Academy is to improve the research mentoring relationships for mentees and mentors at all career stages. Facilitators have been trained through the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) program.

This program is based on the curriculum in the Entering Mentoring series. While the curriculum was originally designed for faculty new to mentoring, it is also a useful resource for training of established mentors or those who have never had formal mentoring training in the past. The curriculum satisfies the new NIGMS guidelines regarding the preparation of mentors involved in training grants.

The Program will hold sessions centering around these general themes.  Faculty are encouraged to eventually attend each of these sessions, which cover the core CIMER curriculum.

  • Maintaining Effective Communication

  • Aligning Expectations

  • Addressing Equity and Inclusion

  • Fostering Independence

  • Promoting Professional Development

The format of the sessions center around small group activities, case studies, and facilitated discussions around mentoring dilemmas and is designed for faculty to share successful mentoring up strategies. Participants in this program will learn how to better coach and counsel mentees and enhance their own interpersonal skills for mentor-mentee interactions. Case studies represent research settings that range from basic science to clinical translational research.

The 2023 MICHR Mentoring Academy will offer five of the topics virtually over the year to increase access to these training opportunities. Each will be held as an individual two-hour session.
