Behavioral Research Innovation and Support Program (BRISP)

For:

What is this service?

The main objective of the Behavioral Research Innovation and Support Program (BRISP) is to develop, demonstrate, and disseminate a comprehensive program for advancing rigor and innovation in behavioral and social science research (BSSR).

BSSR comprises about half of the national and U-M federally funded human subjects research grants and continues to grow.  As of 2023, U-M ranks #1 in the nation in federal social and behavioral science funding, and 50% of new U-M investigator-initiated trials are classified as “behavioral”.

Our missions are to:

  1. To enhance the quality, impact, and translation of research that involves the study of human behavior.

  2. To develop excellent BSSR scientists and staff that:

  • consider appropriate behavioral frameworks in study development and implementation

  • leverage best practices for BSSR in study design, conduct, and analysis

  • support culturally responsive study design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination

For more information about BSSR and how it stands apart from other research, please visit the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research at the National Institute of Health.

We provide one-on-one consultations on:

  • Health equity in BSSR interventions and study design

  • Behavioral frameworks and theories

  • Protocol development and implementation

  • Measuring treatment and interventionist fidelity

  • Measurement of social and behavioral constructs

  • Other resources at U-M to support BSSR
